'A Tasty Way to Snack' Program

Dole South Africa, the Johannesburg Fresh Produce Market and the Departments of Education and Health pooled their knowledge and resources and launched a nutrition-related pilot program in May 2006, called 'A Tasty Way to Snack'.

Reaching nearly 2,000 kids in three schools, the first phase focused on the benefits of adopting a balanced diet rich in fruit and vegetables, and on explaining health benefits and functional terms such as Vitamin C and antioxidants. Kids were also taught a jingle to help them remember this information. Each child received a fruit and teachers received posters, which they were encouraged to display in the classrooms. A contest to name fruit characters and draw fruits and vegetables was also launched, with the best decorated classroom, best drawing and best school to be named on the follow-up visits.

The need for broadening the scope of the pilot became obvious almost immediately and it quickly evolved into a major program by August. To date, including the pilot, the program has been rolled out in 15 schools and has reached over 8,000 learners.

Dole South Africa is now recognized as a leader in the South African industry, as a Company that is concerned about the wellbeing of children and a Company committed to living out its claim"Dole makes you feel good".

August Sponsorship in South Africa

In August 2006, Dole South Africa sponsored an event organized by service organizations such as the International Association of Lions Clubs and Rotary Clubs in Cape Town. Once a year, 3,000 or more disabled children and adults are entertained for a day of fun, games and other treats."Another effective way of showing our commitment to healthy eating!"

Camp Sizani – Nutrition for Kids

Camp Sizani, run by the Hope Nutritional Consultancy recognizes that school holiday camps can help confront South Africa's growing problem of orphaned children by providing a structured, healthy and safe environment for them during school holidays.

One major goal of the camp is to empower the children with nutritional skills and knowledge that will help them make sound decisions and plan well-balanced, healthy meals for themselves and their friends affected by the HIV/AIDS epidemic.

Dole supports these camps by supplying DOLE Fruit Cups and promotional material such as camp T-shirts, aprons and fruit posters.
