Since
Dole South Africa was established in 1998, less than 12 months after deregulation of the fruit industry in South Africa. Today, Dole is the country's second largest exporter of fresh fruit and has grown into one of the most successful members of the Dole family.
Activities
We export on behalf of over 200 growers throughout South Africa, Namibia and Swaziland. The harvesting of apricots, peaches and nectarines starts in November, marking the start of the deciduous season. This is followed by plums between December and March. Also, at the end of October, the grapes from the Orange River start followed by the grapes from the Northern Cape and the Hex and Berg River valleys in the Western Cape. Grapes are supplied from November through to May. Apple harvesting commences in January, running through to June.
Citrus growing areas are widely spread throughout South Africa and Swaziland. The season starts with soft citrus and early lemons in March and continuing late into September with Valencia oranges.
We have more recently established our local market company, Malembo to manage the sales of product to the South African market. Malembo has also successfully implemented another first for Dole South Africa by importing DOLE Fruit Cups from Thailand and the Philippines. This is the first time that fruit cups are available in South Africa. Malembo has recently undertaken an import program of stone fruit and grapes for the local market, and this will be expanded to include all fruit types.
